In 2022, one of the primary sources of worry remains the climate crisis. As populations, economies, and standards of living grow, so does the cumulative level of greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, the emissions of greenhouse gas have risen to record labels not seen in three million years.

The last scientific report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change(IRCC) conducted in 2021 finds changes in Earth’s climate in every region and across the whole climate system. Many changes are unprecedented in thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of years. Some, such as continued sea level rise, are irreversible over hundreds to thousands of years. Fortunately, the report also shows that human actions still have the potential to determine the future course of climate, pointing to string and sustained reductions in emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses to limit climate change

As extreme climate events rise around the world, 2022 sees another round of wildfires, super-storms, extreme rain, heatwaves, drought and flooding. The UN is expecting countries to set out more ambitious emissions goals.

A study conducted by the UK-based non profit Christian Aid in December of last year showed that at least 10 climate disasters last year resulted in damages worth $1.5billion dollars. This provides a snapshot of the kind of extreme weather events that are becoming annual dangers. Citizens of highly vulnerable countries such as India are already facing the devastating effects of climate change.

As the world picks up speed in its race against climate change and moves forward from the 2021 Glasgow Climate Change Conference, ten key global events taking place in 2022 will shape critical conversations and influence public policy decisions around this defining issue of our times.
